Attendance

Every Day Counts

How important is it for every student at Donaldson Way to attend school everyday?  Students achieve learning success when they are in class with their teachers.  Aside from the critical need to be present for the continuity of day-to-day learning, Donaldson Way only receives the money to support our educational programs based on the number of days students actually attend school. If a student is absent for any reason, even if the absence is excused or due to illness, Alta Heights does not receive money for those days.

Every absence counts. Our attendance rate is high, but we can improve!  This is an area where parents have great influence.  Make sure your child attends school every day unless he or she is sick.  Please schedule family trips on vacation days or holidays only and routine medical appointments outside the school day as much as possible. If parents and guardians can increase our attendance rate by as little as 1% in Napa Valley Unified, it will generate close to $900,000 needed dollars.

We all want the best for our students and the maximum amount of funds to support their education. Help us achieve this goal by making sure your child attends class everyday because, every day counts!

Reporting an Absence

If your child will not be at school due to an illness or other reason, please contact the office first thing in the morning. You may leave a message if no one is available or it is before office hours. If we have not heard from you and your child is marked absent, you will receive an automated call regarding the absence.  Students who arrive after 8:05 are considered tardy and must come to the office to get a late slip.  This is something that you can easily avoid by ensuring that your child is at school everyday and on time.

The Napa Valley Unified School District Child Welfare & Attendance office sent out a notice clarifying the attendance policies and procedures of all schools in our district. Please make sure to read the outlined policies.  If you need a copy,of their letter, you can get one in our office.  If you have any questions regarding these policies, please call their office at (707) 253-4956.

Below, we briefly highlighted a few of the policies that mainly impact elementary schools.  For full details please see the original notice.

  • Excused Absences are for illness, quarantine by health officer, medical and dental appointments, bereavement, religious holidays, or court appearances.  For these absences to be marked excused, you must send a note, phone the office, or have a physician’s verification within 5 days of the absence.  Any absence not cleared within the 5 day time frame will be marked truant.
  • Unexcused Absences are for reasons not listed above.  Going out of town or vacations are unexcused, so please plan your trips during a holiday or school break.
  • Short Term Independent Study can be requested in writing at least 5 school days prior to absence and must be approved by the classroom teacher and the principal if you are going to be gone no less than 5 consecutive school days and no more than 20 consecutive school days.  No more than one short term independent study agreement will be granted annually. Short term independent study will not be granted for the months of December and January.
  • What is Marked Truancy?  A student is truant when they are absent from school without a valid excuse five (5) full school days  or tardy more than 30 minutes five times in one school year or any combination thereof.  If a student has 5 of these unexcused absences, a truancy letter will be sent home. After the first letter, attendance will be monitored and additional truancies may result in an appearance before the School Attendance Review Team (SART) and School Attendance Review Board (SARB).
